Jingo-ji temple live camera — Ukyo, Kyoto

A temple in the mountains of Takao, at the top of a long stone stairway from the Kiyotaki river. A noted place for autumn colour: when the valley turns, the whole approach looks different.

What you are looking at

Looking down on a vermilion-railed bridge over the Kiyotaki river and the wooded slope on the far side. No temple buildings appear in the frame. A long flight of stone steps begins across the bridge, and the grounds lie at the top of it.

Jingo-ji stands halfway up Mount Takao, formed in 824 by merging two temples connected with the Wake family. Kukai lived here for a time after returning from Tang China in 806, and Saicho is known to have lectured here. From the city of Kyoto it is one mountain further in.

Being inside a valley, the sun leaves it earlier than the city-centre cameras. If you are going to look, the hours when the sun is high suit it.

The stone steps above the bridge number more than three hundred. The grounds are absent from the frame because the temple lies at the top of them; what this camera sees is only the entrance to the approach. Along the Kiyotaki river, Takao continues into Makinoo and Toganoo, the three together known as Sanbi. The autumn colour takes the whole valley, so the slope across the bridge turns before the near side does.

From the far end of the grounds you can throw kawarake, unglazed clay discs, down into the valley. What they are thrown into is the valley of the Kiyotaki river that this camera looks down on. The discs are meant to carry misfortune away with them, and Jingo-ji is held to be where the custom started.

Being a video stream, there is no wait for a refresh. Japan time. The stream puts fourteen cameras on one channel, so it cannot be played inside this site.
