Ginkaku-ji, the Silver Pavilion live camera — Sakyo, Kyoto

The gate of Jisho-ji. The approach runs between tall clipped hedges, and the queue for admission forms along it. In autumn the movement stops from morning on.

What you are looking at

The shop-lined slope in front of Ginkaku-ji, seen from above. Curtains and banners of souvenir shops line both sides, and the entrance to the grounds lies at the far end.

Ginkaku-ji is properly called Jisho-ji, and grew out of the Higashiyama villa built by Ashikaga Yoshimasa in 1482. The Kannon hall, the “Silver Pavilion” itself, is a National Treasure, and the temple is inscribed as part of the World Heritage site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”. Despite the name, no silver leaf was ever applied.

The street is narrow, so the whole frame changes character as the crowd grows. Being a video stream, the congestion shows as it is.

Walk down the slope from the gate and turn south, and the Philosopher's Path begins, following the canal as far as the area around Eikando. This site also carries a camera at Eikando, at the southern end of that path, so putting the two side by side shows both ends of the walk at the same moment on the same day. The slope itself is narrow, and whether the shops on either side are open changes even how bright the frame is.

Past the ticket gate, apart from the silver pavilion itself, a building called the Togu-do survives. The four-and-a-half-mat room inside it, the Dojinsai, is counted among the oldest interiors in the shoin style, and it too is a national treasure. The cone and sea of raked sand in the garden were not there in the time of Ashikaga Yoshimasa; they were shaped in the Edo period.

Japan time. After the shops shut, the lights along the street thin out and the far end can no longer be made out. Fourteen cameras stream from one channel at once, so this one cannot be played inside this site.
