Looking north from a high vantage. The lower half of the frame holds the roofs and trees of Reykjavik, with the sea beyond and, on the far shore, the ridge of a flat-topped mountain lying across the view. Sky takes up a large share of the frame.
The Icelandic Met Office placed this camera on top of its own building at Bústaðavegur 7–9. The sea is Faxaflói bay and the mountain opposite is Esja; both are visible straight from the streets of the capital.
Almost all of Iceland’s land lies outside the Arctic Circle, and this spot in the capital does too. Neither midnight sun nor polar night occurs; the sun rises and sets in both summer and winter. The latitude is high, though, so summer nights are bright and winter days are short.
The name Reykjavík means “smoky bay”, and is said to come from the geothermal steam the first settlers saw. The city's hot water and heating still come from the ground, so almost nothing goes up a chimney here. Whether Esja shows across the water is therefore decided by cloud and rain alone. Esja rises above 900 metres at its highest, and holds snow for a long season.
