Hveravellir live camera — Central Highlands
A geothermal field at 640 m, on the bare ground between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull ice caps. Apart from the patch of steam vents and hot springs it is lava and gravel desert, and the Kjölur road (35) that passes it is only open from early summer to autumn.

A single small hut with a red roof stands in the middle of rust-coloured wasteland. Beyond it is a low, rolling plateau, and the sky is more often than not a sheet of cloud. Far off to the right, a vehicle and what look like buildings show small in the frame.
Hveravellir is a geothermal area on a 640-metre plateau held between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull ice caps. Apart from the one corner where steam vents and hot springs rise, it is lava and gravel desert. The Kjölur route (road 35) that passes nearby is open only from early summer to autumn.
Set between two ice caps, the weather here turns fast. A clear frame and a frame showing nothing can trade places within the same day.
The Kjölur route is an unmade road that crosses the interior between the two ice caps, and it opens only once the snow has gone from the highland. For the winter, in other words, there is no driving in here. Boardwalks cross the steaming ground, and because the ground itself is warm, that patch can stay bare while everything around it is white.
