Mown grassland and a single road crossing it fill the lower half of the frame. Beyond the road is low grass with a few vehicles and what looks like equipment showing small, and past that the sea horizon. Sky takes up a large share of the frame.
Tjörnes is a peninsula pushing north between Öxarfjörður and Skjálfandi, and Mánarbakki is an observation point at a farm on it. Beyond the horizon is the Arctic Ocean, and this is about the closest the Icelandic mainland comes to the line of the Arctic Circle.
It does not cross it, though. Neither midnight sun nor polar night occurs, and the sun rises and sets in both summer and winter. The only part of Iceland inside the Circle is the island of Grímsey, off the north coast.
Along the coast of Tjörnes, marine strata holding shell fossils are exposed through several million years of layers. The species of shell swap over between glacial and interglacial periods, readable layer by layer, and the section has long been used to study the changing climate of the North Atlantic. Beyond the horizon, Grímsey — the one piece of Iceland inside the Arctic Circle — lies about forty kilometres from this shore.
