Mown pasture and a wooden fence in the foreground, with a single weather mast standing at the right. Beyond that is the water of a lagoon, and dark rock mountains run across the far shore. Between those mountains, several white tongues of ice come down.
Höfn is a fishing town in southeast Iceland, and the camera looks north across the lagoon from there. The white parts are outlet glaciers flowing down from Vatnajökull; what is in the frame is a few of those falling from its southern edge.
White ice dissolves easily into a white sky. It is worth opening it in the expectation of waiting for a day when the mountain outlines come out.
Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe by volume, covering about eight per cent of Iceland. The ice cap and its surroundings were inscribed as a World Heritage site in 2019. Every one of the outlet tongues is retreating year on year, so within this same framing the white is slowly getting shorter. Höfn is also a port known for its langoustine fishery.
