Mount Asahi, under continuous watch by the Japan Meteorological Agency. It is the highest mountain in Hokkaido, and the frame holds both the peak and the steam rising from Jigokudani on its flank.
It stands 2,291 metres. There is no single mountain called Daisetsuzan — the name covers a group of volcanoes with Asahi as its high point. In Ainu it is Kamuy Mintar, the garden where the gods play. The record of large eruptions is old, but steam still vents continuously partway up.
No eruption has been recorded here in historical times, but at the centre of the range sits Ohachidaira, a caldera two kilometres across formed by an eruption about 38,000 years ago. The pyroclastic flow from it came to roughly eight cubic kilometres, and the thick deposits visible as columnar jointing at Sounkyo and Tenninkyo are what it left. The Jigokudani in the frame, where the steam rises, is a horseshoe-shaped crater open to the west, and sulphur was once dug there.
Daisetsuzan is known as the first place in Japan where the leaves turn. In an early year the colour arrives in mid-September, while the mainland is still trailing summer. It is correspondingly brief and can be over by the end of the month. The first snow is early too, whitening the summit between late September and early October. The few days when autumn colour and first snow are both in the frame are the thing to catch.
Winter days are short here — dark by mid-afternoon in December. Steam shows best on cold winter mornings.
