The mountains that feed the Beppu hot springs. Tsukahara spa lies partway up Garan, where an old crater still gives off steam and strongly acidic water.

One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. It is the mountain that sustains the hot springs of Beppu.
Tsurumidake is 1,375 metres and Garandake 1,045; the two are monitored together as a single volcano. The reason Beppu has that much hot water is that this mountain is there. Halfway up Garandake is Tsukahara Onsen, where steam and strongly acidic water still come out of an old crater. What the mountain behind a hot-spring town is actually doing is visible here directly.
Both eruption records belong to the Garandake side. A phreatic eruption with mudflow occurred in 771, and the eruption of 867 is written up in the Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku: the mountain rumbled, rock flew, black smoke rose and fish in the rivers died. More recently, in 1995, a mud volcano formed in a disused silica quarry on Garandake; by November its crater measured about ten metres on the long axis and about four metres deep.
In winter, rime ice forms. It can be raining in the streets of Beppu on the same day that the top of the mountain is white. Open the Kuju camera straight afterwards and you can see the difference.
Steam looks whiter and thicker the colder the day. When it looks thin in summer, the volume has not dropped.
Mornings are better. Cloud builds over the Oita mountains in the afternoon and the summit is often hidden by early afternoon. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
