What you are looking at
The falls upstream are known for their width rather than their height. Water spreads across more than two hundred metres of width and drops, so it looks like an entirely different thing on a high-water day and a low-water one. Where the river met a hard layer of rock the bed forms a step, and only there does the current quicken.
Downstream, by contrast, it is gentle. Though it is a single river, the surface looks so different from stretch to stretch that opening upstream and downstream in turn makes the difference clear.
The source is neither in Kagoshima nor Miyazaki but at Mount Shirokami in Asagiri, Kumamoto, 1,417 metres. From there it takes in the Hazuki and the Kumanojo, crosses the Sendai plain and goes out to the Satsuma Sea. It runs 137 kilometres over 1,600 square kilometres; the basin spans Miyazaki and Kagoshima and about 200,000 people live in it.
The floods of this river are among the oldest recorded in Japan. The Shoku Nihongi describes a flood here in the year 746, and in the more than a thousand years since, damage to people and livestock has repeated. In recent times the rainy-season downpour of 18 to 23 July 2006 did severe damage. It is a long river, so it is worth remembering that there is a lag before rain upstream appears downstream.
The end of the rainy season from late June into July, and typhoons in August and September, move it most. In winter the flow drops and bed stones and sandbars show broadly. Leave evacuation decisions to the local authorities.
