One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. The whole island was evacuated after the eruption of 2015, and steam rises from the crater of Shindake.
The island lies close to the west of Yakushima, and this steam can be seen from there as well. In the eruption the plume went high and every resident left by boat. People have returned in stages since. It is that crater the camera is pointed at.
Twice before 2015 an eruption burned out a settlement. In 1841 a village burned and many died, and in the eruption from the end of 1933 into the following year the settlement of Nanakama was destroyed by fire, killing eight people and injuring 26. In September 1980 a fissure 800 metres long opened on the east slope of Shindake with a row of explosion craters along it. Each eruption picks a slightly different spot.
Mornings are best. Steam looks whiter and thicker in the colder hours and thinner as the sun climbs. In the damp air of the afternoon, steam and cloud become impossible to tell apart.
The season is winter. It is subtropical here with cloud all year, and visibility is poorest through the rainy season and summer; the air dries enough for the island's outline to appear from November to March. Nights go fully dark, though when activity continues the crater can glow red.
