One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. Across the water from central Kagoshima, it is among the most frequently erupting volcanoes in Japan. This camera sees the mountain from a different angle than the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport one.
What there is to see does not change through the year. When it is active, the plume rises regardless of season, which makes the time of day the thing that matters. Just after sunrise and before sunset the light is behind it, and the plume glows white as the light passes through.
It looks joined to the land now, but it was once an island in the bay. Lava from the Taisho eruption of 1914 filled the strait and connected it to the Osumi peninsula — an island with a known year of becoming a peninsula. The summit crater of Minamidake has been erupting since the explosion of October 1955; in 2024 there were 99 eruptions, eight of which sent the plume more than 3,000 metres above the crater rim.
Which way the plume goes is decided by the wind. In winter the northwesterly carries it towards the Osumi Peninsula, away from the city; in summer a southerly often pushes it over the city instead, so the direction the smoke stretches changes with the season. First snow falls on 18 December in an average year, the latest anywhere in the country.
Nights are dark, but when activity is high the crater can glow red. It is worth opening late.
