A camera placed by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to watch for landslide activity. It shows the body of the volcano, and the plume when there is one.
Sakurajima erupts continuously. In some years it records several hundred explosive events. In the 1914 Taisho eruption, lava filled the strait, and Sakurajima — until then an island — became joined to the Osumi peninsula. People still live at the foot of it.
What this camera is really watching is not the plume but what follows it. Slopes loaded with fresh ash come apart in heavy rain, and debris flows run down the valleys. Open it after rain and you can sometimes see the difference from a normal day.
There is more than one vent. The summit crater of Minamidake and the Showa crater on its eastern flank take turns at being the active one. Ash is part of daily life at the foot of the mountain: the city of Kagoshima hands out yellow bags for residents to sweep the fallen ash into and put out for collection. On days when a lot comes down, street sweepers work through the city.
Which way the plume goes is decided by the wind. In winter the northwesterly monsoon carries it toward the Osumi peninsula; in summer a southerly tends to push it over the city of Kagoshima. The direction the smoke leans changes with the season. Nothing is visible at night.
