What you are looking at
The plaza outside the east exit of Shinjuku Station, seen from above. This is the busiest station in Japan, and this is the exit where the most people come out.
Around 3.5 million passengers pass through Shinjuku Station in a day across all its operators — a world record. What is on screen is a small slice of that, and even so the flow never quite stops. One of the buildings facing the plaza carries a large video screen, and at night its light is what lights the square.
In the morning the crowd is coming out through the gates; by evening it is running the other way, being pulled back into the station. In the middle of the day traffic is more conspicuous than people, and in the small hours both thin out. Few cameras change character so much across 24 hours.
The people on screen are only a fraction of those passing through the station. Shinjuku is ringed by a wide network of underground passages, and on a wet day in particular most of the walking happens below ground. On a day when the surface looks quiet, the station itself is as busy as ever. The large screen on the building the camera sits on is a curved display that only reads as three-dimensional when you look up at it from the pavement, so what is in this frame is the audience that advertising is aimed at.
It reads better at night. There is enough light around it that nothing is lost to darkness, and the shape of the plaza is drawn by the signs. Being a live feed, you see the crowd surge each time the lights change.
