One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. From the beach at Maehama it looks towards the pale mountainside and the harbour.
The white mountain in the frame is Tenjosan. It was formed in the eruption of 838, and that eruption is recorded in written sources. In other words, this island has a mountain whose birth year is known. The top is a flat tableland of grass and gravel with few trees, which is why it reads as white even from a distance.
Ash from the 838 eruption fell across the Kanto, Chubu and Kinki regions; ash traced to Tenjosan has been identified even in the strata around Mount Fuji, and pyroclastic flows ran into the sea. That was more than a thousand years ago, and today there is nowhere on the island giving off steam. In October 1995 an earthquake swarm struck around the island, with 246 felt shocks and a maximum of shindo 5.
Island cameras are vulnerable to cloud and fog. Sea on every side means damp air runs straight into the island and settles on the mountain. From the rainy season through summer especially, there are runs of days when opening it shows only white.
Winter is what to aim for. After the northwesterly monsoon blows, the air dries and both the island's outline and the far side of the sea come clear. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
