One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. The island is two volcanoes, Hachijo-Fuji and Mount Mihara, joined together; from the high ground where the camera sits, gentle slopes and open sea run on together.
The island is pinched in the middle like a gourd because two separately formed mountains met in the centre. Hachijo-Fuji, to the northwest, is the younger: a cone with smooth flanks. Mihara, to the southeast, is older, cut by valleys and rough in profile. Whether the slope in the frame is smooth tells you which one you are looking at.
Only the younger Hachijo-Fuji side has an eruption record. From 1518 to 1523 it erupted from the summit and the mulberry fields were badly damaged, and in October 1605 lava from a line of fissures on the south-east slope buried fields. There is also a record of a submarine eruption near the island the following month that built a volcanic islet, though where it stood is not known. The older Miharayama side has no eruption record at all.
Being in the south of the Izu Islands, it holds daylight longer. Open it in the evening and there is more light left than on the northern islands.
Island cameras are vulnerable to cloud and fog. Aim for winter: after the northwesterly monsoon, the air dries and you see far. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
