After the eruption of 2000, volcanic gas kept coming out of this island for years. No lava had swept the settlements, but because the gas would not clear, the islanders lived off the island for more than four years. It is a case of a place staying uninhabitable long after the eruption itself ended. People live here again now, but that history is part of why the watch continues.
This island erupts at intervals of 17 to 69 years — thirteen times in the last 500 years, each putting out something like 20 to 30 million tonnes. In the eruption that began at the end of March 1643, lava ran about a kilometre into the sea and the whole village of Ako burned. In 1712 muddy water erupted at that same Ako and buried many houses, and the sound of it is recorded to have reached Kamakura.
Early morning is the time. Steam looks whiter and thicker the colder it is, so just after sunrise is clearest. After midday, air rising up the slopes turns into cloud and often hides the high ground alone.
Winter is what to aim for. After the northwesterly monsoon blows, the air dries and both the island's outline and the far side of the sea come clear. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
