One of the volcanoes the Japan Meteorological Agency keeps under constant watch. Niijima is made of white rhyolite, and the camera faces towards neighbouring Shikinejima.
There is a reason the island is white. The light stone quarried here, called koga stone, comes from very few places in the world, and cut blocks of it have long been used as building material. It is light enough to float on water, and it stands in the island's walls and buildings as it comes. The white of the coastal cliffs is the same rock body.
Mukaiyama, where that stone is quarried, was built by the eruption of 886. Court records say that a new island came into being at the time. Black smoke and a roaring sound carried as far as the Boso peninsula, and so much ash and sand fell that cattle and horses died in numbers. The low ground in the middle of the island, where the village stands, is a plateau of material that same ninth-century eruption dropped.
Assume island cameras are vulnerable to cloud and fog. Sea on every side means damp air runs straight into the island. From the rainy season through summer especially, there are runs of days when opening it shows only white.
Winter is what to aim for. After the northwesterly monsoon blows, the air dries and both the island's outline and the far side of the sea come clear. A still image, refreshed every two minutes.
