What you are looking at

The sample frame looks down from high up over low tropical forest, with flat blue sea filling the right half. A band of cumulus lines the horizon, and a green clearing shows on the headland to the left.

It is at Kenting, the southern tip of Taiwan, and Kenting was the first national park designated in the country. The terrace is former seabed that has been lifted up, and coral limestone is exposed at the surface. The tower rises above the trees, so the canopy below is in view as well.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. Kenting is the southernmost part of the island so the days run longer, and opening it around dinner time in Japan lands squarely on the hours when the sun is low.

The water on the seaward side is the Bashi Channel: south of here is no longer Taiwan but the sea between the island and the Philippines. Hollows and pillars left where rain dissolved the limestone are scattered through the park, and the trails thread between them. From autumn into winter the north-east monsoon blows hard, and rough days at sea become more frequent.

The place name Kenting comes from a word for the hands who came in to break the ground here under the Qing. It is a park of forest and sea now, but the name keeps the memory of the side that cleared the land. The lighthouse at Eluanbi, on the southern tip of the peninsula, is not far from here and stands on the same limestone tableland.

This is also a typhoon track, and there are days when a rough sea is what shows. On windy days the colour of the water changes and white caps run out to the horizon.
