Neidong live camera — Neidong, New Taipei
A gorge centred on the three-tiered Xinxian waterfall. It carries a lot of water, and damp air sits in the valley all day.
What you are looking at
In the sample frame the Xinxian waterfall drops in three tiers down a dark wet rock face, centre-left. Below are mossy boulders and shallow water, tree ferns stand to the right, and the whole frame is whitened by spray.
The fall is in three tiers and the camera looks up at it from below. This is the heart of a forest recreation area where the forestry agency has laid out trails. It is in the hills of Wulai in New Taipei city, and the fall is reached on foot from the car park. The mountains of northern Taiwan get a lot of rain, so there is hardly a season when this fall runs thin.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. This is the valley floor, so sunlight reaches it only briefly, and it is brightest around Taiwanese noon when the sun is high.
The stream in the valley is the Nanshi, which becomes the Xindian and then the Tamsui, running out through the city of Taipei. The air moves strongly below the falls, and the forestry agency promotes the spot for the density of its negative ions. Tree ferns grow here because the damp never leaves the valley through the year, and it is the same air that makes the frame look washed out.
This valley used to be called Wawagu, the valley of the babies. The story is that the frogs calling through it at night sounded like infants crying. The valley is damp the year round and carries a good many species of frog, and the call the name came from can still be heard, they say, on an evening after rain.
The lens fogs with moisture at times and the outline of the fall blurs. That in itself is a sign of how wet this valley is. On days of heavy flow, how much of the frame is hazed tells you how hard the water is coming down.
