Shengli tea farm live camera — Alishan, Chiayi

A farm whose tea terraces cover the whole slope. In the morning cloud rises out of the valley and hides the terraces one row at a time.

What you are looking at

In the sample frame, under a strong blue sky, blue-grey ridges recede one after another towards the Central Range. The foreground is dark green forest, there is lens flare at the top right, and two birds are in flight.

A farm in the tea country of Alishan, with tea fields covering the whole slope. The operator notes that in the morning cloud comes up out of the valley and hides the terraces. Alishan tea is grown on slopes above 1,000 metres, and the morning and evening fog is held to be the reason for its flavour.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan, so morning in Japan is morning in Taiwan. Open it over breakfast and you land directly on the hour when the cloud comes up. There is almost no time difference to work out.

Alishan tea is picked several times a year, but it is the spring and winter crops that fetch a price. The terraces follow the contours of the slope, so as the cloud rises the lines vanish from the lowest terrace upwards. How far the cloud has come reads off the number of terraces still visible.

Once the cloud has risen all the way the frame goes white. To see the ridges layered up, an hour with little cloud, as in the sample, works better.
