Lishan, Deji Reservoir live camera — Lishan, Taichung
The reservoir behind an arch dam on the Dajia River. The Jiayang alluvial fan spreads out on the far bank.
What you are looking at
In the sample frame a deep blue-green reservoir wraps around a forested spur, and on top of that spur are white greenhouse roofs, farm buildings and terraced orchards. Steep forested ridges layer up behind, and a cable crosses the lower left.
The reservoir of an arch dam that blocks the Dajia river. The Jiayang alluvial fan spreads on the far side, and the terraced fields in the sample are the orchards on top of that fan. The dam wall is 180 metres high, the tallest in Taiwan, and the Central Cross-Island Highway follows this valley.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. This is high country, so the height of the cloud decides the picture. The water throws light back, so in clear weather this is the brightest of the three cameras at Lishan.
This is the uppermost of four dams in series on the Dajia River, each one taking the water the one above it releases and generating from it again. The earthquake of 1999 and a typhoon in 2004 broke up the Central Cross-Island Highway through this valley, and the stretch from Guguan to Lishan is still closed to ordinary traffic. Getting to Lishan therefore means coming round from the Yilan side or the Puli side. The catchment above the reservoir is largely orchard, and because soil washes in and settles, there is a long-running effort to reduce the farmland on these slopes.
When everything is white, opening the dam first and working through the others makes the situation easier to read. The colour of the lake changes with the season, and when it is turbid it is not the blue-green of the sample.
