What you are looking at

A sandy beach seen from above at an angle. Black rocks run out to sea along the water’s edge, and a rocky headland enters at the left edge. Parasols and people appear on the sand, and the bottom of the frame is bordered by the leaves of the planting in the foreground.

Kenting is where the main island of Taiwan ends at its southern tip, and this beach takes its name from the great rock standing offshore that looks like a ship under sail. Being a 4K camera, it holds the waterline and the rock in the same frame.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan and has no summer time. Kenting is the southernmost point of Taiwan, so its days run longer; opening it around dinner time in Japan lands on the hours when the sun is dropping.

Kenting was the first national park Taiwan established, designated in 1984. The rock offshore is a block of coral limestone that slid down from the cliff behind the beach. The water here belongs to the warm current running up past Taiwan, carries little sediment, and lets coral grow. So what shows in frame is not only the colour of the sand but how far down you can see through the water.

It also lies on the path of typhoons, so there are days when a rough sea fills the frame.
