A forest recreation area under planted cedar and cypress. At about 1,200 m, it is close enough to Taipei for a day trip.

What you are looking at

In the sample frame a rounded forested peak stands centre-right under a pale hazy sky. Transmission pylons rise on the slope, and the lower half is filled with bright canopy. One tree in the foreground has turned reddish.

A forest recreation area in Taoyuan at about 1,200 metres. It is covered in planted cedar and cypress, so the trees are more even in height than in natural forest. It is close enough for a day trip from Taipei, and the pylons in the frame carry a line over the mountain, so human work shows up in the picture as well.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan and has no summer time. Midday in Japan is midday here.

The trails in the recreation area follow the old forestry roads, and part way along there is an outcrop of trace fossils. The rock here is sandstone formed in the sea, so the traces of marine animals sit high up the mountain. The planted conifers were put in block by block in the same years, so looking across the slope the canopy separates into steps of different height.

The cedars filling the slope are not a tree that grew in Taiwan to begin with. They were brought over from Japan and planted during the colonial period, which is why the canopy reads as level. The forest native to this area is mostly broadleaf evergreen, so a stand of conifers like the one in the frame is confined to the places where people put them.

It is a live video stream, so there is no refresh to wait for. When haze or cloud comes in, though, the far mountain disappears entirely and only the near canopy is left. As with the reddish tree in the sample, deciduous trees are mixed in among the planted conifers.
