Taipingshan, Bongbong train station live camera

A station on the forest railway that once carried timber. Today a small tourist train runs from here into the wooded valley.

What you are looking at

In the sample frame heavy cumulus fills the upper half, with streamers of cloud left behind between the valleys. A steep forested ridge comes down from the right.

The station is on Taipingshan in Yilan county; the trolley covers about 2.5 kilometres from Taipingshan Lodge to Maoxing, and the station sits in the 1,900-metre range. The Taipingshan forest railway was laid to bring felled timber down off the mountain, and what the trolley runs on today is only a short piece of that network.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. The operator notes that fog rises to the Taipingshan observation deck in the afternoon, and the Taiwanese afternoon is simply the Japanese afternoon. Taiwan has no summer time.

Taipingshan was counted, in the Japanese period, as one of the three great timber grounds alongside Alishan and Baxianshan. Felled timber went down by cableway and rail to Luodong, and today's trolley runs on a small remnant of that track. This site also carries cameras at Baxianshan and Alishan, so the weather on the same day can be compared across all three.

The name bengbeng che comes from the noise the old rolling stock used to make. The cars now run on electricity and no longer make it. Maoxing, the far end of the stretch you can ride, is where a felling site used to be, and the track was laid that far in the first place in order to fetch the timber.

On days when the fog has risen, the deck camera goes all white, while this station lower down the valley often keeps its shape. When the cloud hangs low instead, it is this one that whites out.
