Lijia live camera — Alishan, Chiayi

Tsou villages scattered through a deep valley. There are no town lights nearby, and the area is known for how dark its night sky is.

What you are looking at

In the sample frame a forested ridge stands at the back and a single-storey shop with a red-roofed section sits at the centre. Red-painted Tsou posts stand to the left, and in front is a gravel yard with cars parked on it. Mist lingers on the right.

Part of Alishan township in Chiayi county, where Tsou settlements are scattered through deep valleys. There are no town lights anywhere near, and the place is known for how dark its night sky is. Motifs like the red post in the sample stand here and there through the village.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan, so the hours that are night in Japan are night at Lijia too. That suits anyone wanting a dark sky: the time difference never turns it into daytime over there. Ten in the evening in Taiwan is 11pm in Japan.

The road drops off the Alishan highway down into the valley, so unlike the ridge-top viewpoints the sky here is cut to the shape of the valley. To see stars you need both a moonless night and a night with no mist left in the valley. The mist still sitting on the right of the sample frame shows exactly how hard that is.

The moon and the weather change from one day to the next, though, so whether stars show is something you find out by opening it. This is also a valley where fog comes easily.
