Hushanyan daylily fields live camera — Huatan, Changhua

Fields where orange daylilies cover a hillside. They are at their fullest from late summer into early autumn.

What you are looking at

The sample is a frame spread out through 360 degrees, showing a rounded hill terraced with rows of daylilies. Stone-slab steps curve up it, there is a red marker post on the left, and red-roofed stalls and palms line up on the right. The sky is blue.

A field in Huatan, Changhua county, where orange daylilies cover the hillside. The operator notes that the flowers peak from the end of summer into early autumn. Which days of a given year are the peak is not something decided here. Hushanyan is an old temple at the foot of the hill, and the field is on the slope behind it.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan: six in the evening there is 7pm here.

The golden needle flower is a daylily, and what gets eaten is the bud, dried before it opens. The well-known growing areas in Taiwan are Liushishishan in Hualien and Taimali in Taitung, but a bud that has been picked never becomes a flower. A field in full bloom like this one, then, is being grown to be looked at rather than harvested. Hushanyan, the temple at the foot of the hill, was built in 1738 and is a listed county monument.

Because it is a 360-degree camera the sides of the frame are stretched wide, and the lines of the steps and the rows bend into arcs. Out of flower, what is left is the green rows and the steps.
