The Pingtung plain from Sandimen live camera

The view opens where the mountains meet the plain: blue ridges in front, then the Pingtung plain and a meandering stream.

What you are looking at

In the sample frame cloud pours down over the dark ridge on the left, and a line of cumulus stands across the middle distance. Beyond it blue ridges layer up one after another, a green knoll sits centre-right, and foliage fills the foreground.

A view opening out at the boundary of mountain and plain, in Sandimen, Pingtung county. Blue mountains stand in the near ground and beyond them the Pingtung plain with its meandering stream. Sandimen is a Paiwan township with its settlements along the edge of the terrace. The stream crossing the far part of the frame is the Ailiao, carrying water out of the mountains across the Pingtung plain. Being up on the terrace, the camera takes in both the mountain side and the plain side at once.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan and has no summer time. Midday in Japan is midday in Pingtung. Noon in Taiwan is 1pm in Japan.

The name Sandimen is a Chinese rendering of Timur, the Paiwan name for this place. In Paiwan culture three things stand for the standing of a household: glass beads, a pottery jar and a bronze knife. Beadmaking had all but died out, but it was rebuilt in this township in the 1980s, and there are workshops here now. A village sits on the boundary between mountain and plain because that is the one place within reach of both the hunting ground above and the market below.

Cloud builds easily on a mountain-and-plain boundary. Even in the sample morning it was already coming over the ridge, and as it increases the plain side is hidden.
