What you are looking at

A wooden viewing deck and its railing fill the lower half of the frame, and beyond it spreads evergreen broadleaf forest. The ridge at the back is often in cloud; in this sample image the skyline has disappeared into white. The pond itself lies outside the camera’s angle and does not appear.

Yangmingshan is a volcanic area immediately north of central Taipei, and Datun Nature Park sits at the foot of Mount Datun there. It is a park built around a pond, where water lilies open on the surface in early summer and which is also known for its butterflies.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan and has no summer time. The hours that are bright in Japan can be taken as bright in Taiwan too.

The Tatun volcano group that makes up Yangmingshan was long taken to be extinct. Research through the 2010s showed a body of magma beneath it, and it is now treated as an active volcano. At Xiaoyoukeng, not far from this park, steam comes hissing out of cracks in the rock. A park full of butterflies and a field of fumaroles sit next to each other on the same mountain. Mount Datun itself is 1,092 metres, low enough to drive up from central Taipei.

Still, fog comes easily on this mountain and an all-white frame is not unusual. When that happens, it is worth leaving it a while and opening it again.
