Alishan Forest Railway live camera — Alishan, Chiayi
A mountain railway opened in 1912 to bring cypress timber down. Trains still climb the steep slope by switchback.
What you are looking at
The sample frame shows narrow-gauge track curving away through dense forest. The horizontal rail of a wooden fence runs along the bottom edge, and a leafy branch blocks the left half. No train is in the picture.
The gauge is a narrow 762mm, and the steep sections are climbed by reversing. The line is 71 kilometres long, rising from Chiayi near the coast to over 2,000 metres. Across that much height the forest beside the track changes over, from tropical species at the bottom to temperate ones at the top. Tourist trains run on it now.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan: noon in Taiwan is 1pm in Japan, and there is no summer time. Hours that are bright in Japan can be taken as bright at Alishan too.
Around Dulishan the line spirals to gain height, and higher up it switches back. Set beside the camera at Fenqihu, further down the same line, it shows how different the forest and the weather are at 1,400 metres and above 2,000. The whole route from Chiayi up to Alishan became through-runnable again only in 2024.
The spiral at Mount Duli circles the same mountain three times as it climbs, so a passenger sees the village of Zhangnaoliao below three times over, from a different height each time. It is a way of solving a slope too steep to climb head on, by buying height with distance. The station at the top of the spiral is Duli itself, and from there the line goes on climbing toward Fenqihu.
This is not a camera for catching the moment a train passes. Services are few, so more often than not there is only track in the frame when you open it. It is better thought of as a way to see how bright the forest is and how the mist is behaving.
