Manyueyuan live camera — Manyueyuan, New Taipei

A wooded gorge named after a hill shaped like a full moon. Waterfall follows waterfall, and the maples turn in autumn.

What you are looking at

The sample frame is backlit: dense green leaves and trunks covered in epiphytes, with a dry cobbled stream bed on the left and strong dappled light falling through.

It lies in the hills of Sanxia in New Taipei city, within day-trip distance of Taipei. Manyueyuan Falls and Chunu Falls are the main two, linked by a trail. The valley is deep, so the only open ground is along the stream; everything else is under tree cover.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. Valley cameras get sunlight for a short part of the day, and it is brightest around Taiwanese noon, early afternoon in Japan, when the sun stands over the valley.

The stream in the valley is the Ruazi, which joins the Dahan and finally becomes the Tamsui, running out through the city of Taipei. The water in this frame is, in other words, the headwater of Taipei's river. The maple that turns here is the Taiwan maple, at its best from late November into December, about a month later than in Japan.

The names of the trees that turn colour here are easy to confuse. The Taiwan maple is a maple, but the fengxiang growing in the same valley is not one at all; the leaves look alike, but the fruit they set is quite different. Chinese uses the character for maple for both, so it is worth reading down to the name of the tree on a notice about autumn colour.

After rain the water rises and covers the bed. A day like the sample, with the stones dry and exposed, means the water is low. The sun falls towards the lens, so in the morning the leaves show through.
