Basianshan live camera — Basianshan, Taichung
A forest recreation area in the valley where the Shiwen and Jiabao streams meet. It was once counted among Taiwan's three great logging grounds.
What you are looking at
In the sample frame large cumulus float in a blue sky and two forested ridges meet at the centre. The dark roof of a building enters at the bottom right.
The way the ridges meet in the frame is the junction of those two valleys. The entrance to the recreation area is around 1,000 metres, while Baxianshan itself reaches 2,366 metres, and trails run from the valley floor up to the ridge. Its place among the three great timber grounds came from the cypress stands here, and once the felling ended the site was laid out as a recreation area.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan and has no summer time. Valley cameras get sunlight for a short part of the day: with slopes on both sides, the valley floor falls into shadow morning and evening.
Baxianshan was also one of the three great timber grounds of the Japanese period; the other two are Alishan and Taipingshan. Below this junction the water of the Shiwen and Jiabao streams drops into the Dajia river and runs on down the valley. Because the camera sits at the confluence, after rain the two streams can be clouded to different degrees, and the colour of the water shows which catchment the rain fell on.
The name Baxianshan is said to come from the height measured in the colonial period, which came out at about eight thousand shaku. Eight thousand shaku is roughly 2,400 metres, close enough to the 2,366 metres the mountain is given now. It has nothing to do with the eight immortals the characters bring to mind.
It is brightest around Taiwanese noon, early afternoon in Japan, when the sun comes closest to standing over the valley. As it darkens, the valley floor is the first thing to go.
