What you are looking at

The sample is a 360-degree frame: a broad mown green launch slope on the right, dropping away to the left into the flat Pingtung plain and its braided river. Mountains run off to the right rear, and there is fair-weather cloud. The shadow of the camera mast lies across the grass.

A slope where the Central Range blocks the wind and the rising air stays steady, used as a paragliding launch site. The airspace is 16 kilometres wide and climbs to 1,000 metres. It is laid out as Saijia Aviation Park, one of the best known paragliding places in Taiwan.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. Midday in Japan is midday in Pingtung.

The rising air itself cannot be seen, but the cloud that forms at the top of it can. On a day when puffs of cumulus line up with their flat bases all at one level, the air is going up as far as that level. Whether it is a flyable day is therefore read off the cloud base sooner than off the slope. The grass is kept short because a pilot has to run out dragging a wing, and long grass gets in the way.

Because it is a 360-degree camera the sides of the frame are stretched and the edge of the slope reads as an arc. Whether anyone is flying is decided by the wind and the weather that day. On a still day there are no people and no canopies, only the mown grass.
