What you are looking at
In the sample frame there is a hall with yellow walls and a red roof on the left, and on the right a seated Buddha on a plinth. A long flight of steps leads up to the statue, forested hillside stands behind, and in front are mown grass and a white car.
A 20-metre Buddha cast from 167 tonnes of bronze, finished in 2015 after fifteen years of work. The mountains of Liugui layer up behind it. The temple is in the hills of Liugui in Kaohsiung, and the hall and the Buddha are joined by the long stairway. The grounds are terraced into the hillside.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. Midday in Japan is midday in Liugui. Noon in Taiwan is 1pm in Japan, and there is no summer time.
The hills stacked up behind are cut from a thick bed of conglomerate. Elsewhere in Liugui is a protected area called Shibalohanshan, where the same bed stands as a row of sharp rock pinnacles. Gravel beds like this are not fully cemented, so rain carves them deeply, and what is left is all steep faces and thin ridges. That is also why the ground for this temple had to be cut into terraces: there is almost no flat land to build on.
Being a bronze figure, how it reads changes a great deal with the direction of the light. In the sample morning the face of the statue was lit; once the sun has come round, the same statue is in shadow. After dark only the lights of the hall remain and the mountains behind are gone.
