What you are looking at

In the sample frame a lake tinted with the colour of algae crosses the middle of the picture, with bamboo and broadleaf trees on both banks. A long pale building runs along the very top edge, and spots of lens flare are scattered across it. The 72-metre Maitreya statue is not inside the angle of this sample.

A lake in Emei, Hsinchu county, with the Maitreya statue standing on a cape that juts into it. The Ximaopu suspension bridge crosses in the near ground. Shitoushan is the range here, part of the Tri-Mountain national scenic area. Lake Emei is artificial, made by damming a river, and Emei is also Oriental Beauty tea country.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. Lake cameras have a water surface that throws light back, so clear days are bright, while under cloud the boundary between lake and sky vanishes and the picture flattens out.

Temples have been built on Shitoushan since the end of the nineteenth century. Most of them are fitted into hollows and overhangs in the rock rather than standing on open ground, which makes them built quite differently from a temple on the flat. An old path along the ridge links one to the next, so they can be walked in a round. The mountain is named for the shape of the ridge, which reads as the head of a crouching lion.

To see the shape of the lake, the hours when the sun is high — early afternoon in Japan — are the ones that suit. It is worth comparing it with the Dapu dam camera, which shows the same lake from another angle.
