What you are looking at

In the sample frame mats of floating weed sit on a long narrow reservoir, with trees along the banks. Hazy blue ridges layer up behind under a whitish sky, and a small tower shows at the top right.

The long narrow lake made by the Dapu dam; it shows the same Lake Emei from a different angle than the Maitreya camera does. The Dapu dam was completed in 1960 for irrigation, and the lake it made is Lake Emei. It is long and narrow because what was flooded was simply the valley of the river.

Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. The water throws light back, so clear days are bright and cloud erases the line between lake and sky.

Because this is an irrigation dam, the level follows the farming calendar as well as the rainfall. Rice is grown twice a year in Taiwan, and water is let down from the reservoir before the paddies are flooded, which is when it stands lowest. A dry band showing along the shore means you are looking at it in one of those drawn-down spells. The water goes to the paddies on the lower Zhonggang River, and it supplies the valleys of Emei and Beipu as well.

Being a dam lake, the level moves with the season and the spread of the floating weed changes with it. This is a camera for looking at the scene; it cannot be used to judge releases or water levels. The weed drifts to one side with the wind, so where the mats sit in the sample is a rough guide to its direction.
