Mahogany Avenue, Xinwei Forest Park live camera

In the sample frame a straight track lined with tall mahogany trunks runs away to a bright gap at the far end. Leaf litter has gathered on the surface, and a red no-vehicles sign in Chinese is fixed to the post on the right.
A former nursery on the river terrace of the Laonong river in Liugui, Kaohsiung. An avenue of mahogany runs through it, with the Central Range visible to the east. The avenue was planted as a stand for raising seedlings and continues for about two kilometres.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan and has no summer time. Hours that are bright in Japan are, near enough, bright in Taiwan. Noon in Taiwan is 1pm in Japan.
Mahogany is not a Taiwanese tree. It was brought in from Central America during the Japanese period, valued as a furniture timber and planted here to see whether it would take to the ground. Its leaf fall comes at an odd time: not autumn but February to April, all at once, with the new leaves following immediately. So the season when this road is buried in fallen leaves is spring, out of step with the autumn colour of Japan.
Inside the avenue the branches close over the top, so even in clear weather the track is lit in patches. After dark only the gap at the far end is left. When the leaves fall the surface turns brown all over, and litter gathers as it has in the sample.
