In the sample frame, in warm hazy light, the wide braided gravel bed of the Laonong river spreads across the whole bottom of the picture. A settlement lines the far bank, ridges recede in layers to the left, and cumulus is building.
The view down into the Laonong valley from in front of the temple’s main hall. The layered mountains of Liugui stand directly ahead. Past here the Laonong joins the Qishan river to become the Gaoping, the largest river system in southern Taiwan.
Taiwan is only one hour behind Japan. Morning in Japan is morning in Taiwan. Taiwan has no summer time, so the gap stays one hour all year.
Typhoon Morakot, in August 2009, dropped more than two thousand millimetres of rain on this area in two days, a figure with few equals in Taiwan's records. Slope after slope failed and fed the river, bridges in Liugui went down, and the village of Xiaolin upstream was buried under a landslide. The width of the gravel bed spread across this frame now includes the debris that came out then.
On a bed this wide, which way the water has drawn itself differs from day to day. After rain the gravel is covered and the width of the bed appears to change outright. On hazy days the ridges at the back disappear and only the bed and the far bank are left.
