Izu Oshima live camera — Oshima, Tokyo
The 1986 eruption evacuated every resident off the island. The camera looks at the Mount Mihara caldera from the northwest rim.

Izu Oshima, under continuous watch by the Japan Meteorological Agency, showing Mount Mihara at the centre of the island.
Mihara is 758 metres. The island itself is a volcano built up from the seafloor, and it has poured out basaltic lava again and again. It is known for erupting on something close to a hundred-year rhythm; in November 1986 lava advanced on the settlements and roughly ten thousand residents were evacuated off the island entirely. The black lava field left by that eruption still spreads around the crater.
Eruptions here come in sizes. Large ones putting out hundreds of millions of tonnes have happened ten times since the caldera formed, the last being the An-ei eruption from 1777. Medium ones, in the tens of millions of tonnes, came three times — 1912, 1950 and 1986 — at intervals of 36 to 38 years. In the eruption of 1950 to 1951 the cinder cone built up inside the crater until it nearly matched the height of Mount Mihara itself.
Being an island in open sea, it is strongly affected by mist and cloud, and from spring through the rainy season there are long runs of days when the whole island is fogged in. Winter is the clearest time: on a bright day with the northwesterly monsoon blowing, the air is dry and the view runs a long way.
Morning to late morning is the window. Camellias flower on the slopes from late January into February, but the camera is aimed at the mountain and does not show them. The still refreshes every two minutes.
